Let the Wild Rumpus Start!
Life is an adventure or nothing. – Helen Keller
Its true. I have neglected my blog these past few months. Please forgive me. I have been busy being nauseas and exhausted (for those of you that don’t know, the first trimester can be an [insert expletive]!!). Hubby and I recently found out there will be a (surprise!) mini us welcomed into the world this Fall. Yes, true to my nature, I will be both running a growing business and taking care of a newborn (because where’s the fun in doing one enormous task at a time?!).
As a result of my pregnancy (in between naps, of course), I have spent a lot of time pondering what it means to do what you love. It has become even more important to me to define what my particular “American Dream” is and to be sure that I am taking steps to live that dream, every day. My child will be born into a brave new world. And I don’t want Baby Rodgers to ever feel that he or she has to be a cog in the machine, like I have felt at times. Its important to me that I figure out how to live my best life so that I can both enjoy my life to the very fullest and so that I may model that ‘living the dream’ is possible for my child.
Unfortunately, some entrepreneurs think that having a child will or should stop you from accomplishing your dreams and goals. How will you run a business and stay home with your baby? How can you travel regularly with a child? Are you seriously considering cloth diapers? (Um, yes I am!) Blah, blah, blah. Some of these questions may be valid but the point of them is to discourage and me no likey discouragement!
In my opinion, raising a child is a part of the wonderful adventure of life, it shouldn’t be something that ends the adventure of life. Why can’t I be an entrepreneur and a mom and a world traveler and whatever else I want to be? Plus, have you not read the blogs of Carolyn Elefant, Susan Cartier Liebel and Pam Slim? Mothers are warriors at home and in the world! I am blessed and excited to join this army of powerful women. Let the wild rumpus start!
So here’s to all of the Warrior Mothers out there who are living their dream which includes raising an awesome little human (or humans, for the truly brave!); especially my Mom and sister, who have provided me with an awesome example of what it looks like to raise well-balanced children while also having a (kickass) career. You go, Girls!
Lastly, I thought I might leave you with a little inspirational passage from a book I absolutely adored as a child, Where the Wild Things Are. Pam Slim shared this in a post (from which I stole, no, borrowed the title of this post) and I thought it would be fitting here:
And when he came to the place where the wild things are
they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth
and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws
till Max said “BE STILL!”
and tamed them with the magic trick
of staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once
and they were frightened and called him the most wild thing of all
and made him king of all wild things
“And now,” cried Max, “let the wild rumpus start!”
What wild rumpus are you starting? What so-called impossible goals are you staring down? Are you parenting and running a business? Or parenting and living an “impossible” dream, like traveling abroad frequently or being a professional rock climber? Share your experiences of living your dream in the comments!
